A New Book on Race, Ethnicity and Crime in the UK

Released just a few weeks ago, New Directions in Race, Ethnicity and Crime, co-edited by Border Criminologies advisory board member Coretta Philips and Colin Webster, represents an exciting new contribution to the relatively small body of criminological literature on race and ethnicity.

Incorporating theoretically informed, empirical research, the book revisits familiar criminological concerns with policing, crime and punishment, while including new areas on immigration, anti-semitism and asylum seekers. It includes chapters by three members of the Border Criminologies group, Mary Bosworth, Blerina Kellezi (writing together about women in detention) and Alpa Parmar (on policing and counter-terrorism). According to the editors, "in offering minority perspectives on race, crime and justice and white inmate perspectives from the multicultural prison, the book emphasises contrasting and distinctive influences on constructing ethnic identities."
