The workshop asked attendees to consider how we can better join up the academic research with policy, and adopt AI into practice but ensure we include wider stakeholder voices in the decision making around AI.

Special guests were invited to present both in person and live streamed from around the UK.

Alice Montgomery-Reed, Head of FutureNHS  and Rosie Hakes presented a successful example of an AI network and platform to our experts during the morning.

Later, Dr Simon Watt, UCL UCL WEISS In Theatre Project, link: In Theatre | Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences - UCL – University College London; Professor Keeley Crockett and Dr Caitlin Nunn from Manchester Metropolitan University talking about the Peas on Pods project,  PEAs in Pods (mmu.ac.uk); Dr Mark Beggs former COO of NCIMI,  NCIMI is transforming healthcare through AI and medical imaging | NCIMI

The following areas were discussed as the experts were split into tables of 7:

  1. What are the informational and support needs for AI development and use from an industry, clinical, and patient/public perspective.
  2. Ways in which we can engage with and involve underserved groups in AI research.
  3. How can opportunities be created for frontline staff to be part of the decision making on implementing AI in their workspaces.
  4. Designing a platform for sustainable stakeholder engagement and involvement in AI research and implementation – who, what, why, how

The workshop ended with the experts agreeing on which key elements are needed to design a platform, including a network for stakeholder engagement and involvement in AI.

This highly successful event has created a significant resource and network for future discussions and collaborations regarding AI in healthcare.
